MEDICAL - DENTAL - OPTICIANS

HEALTHCARE in CYPRUS

Cyprus has 1st Class Medical & Health Care facilities some of the best in the EEC
including frequent open heart surgery and kidney and other transplant
operations and across the whole range of modern surgery and modern medIcine
as well as Dental Surgery and Eye Operations - including "Cataract removals"

As well as the major Government Hospitals in Nicosia - Larnaca and Paralimni there
are many Private Clinics in the Larnaca and Famagusta Districts including the
"Santa Marina PolyClinic "in Paralimni as just one excellent example

Prior to EEC Membership Healthcare from Government Hospitals was not available
without charge to UK Residents living in Cyprus.

Since April 2004 this situation has now changed.

Under EEC Membership - UK Citizens living in Cyprus are entitled to free
Emergency Medical Treatment at all Local Hospitals.

In addition Free Medical Care and Presciption Facilities are also available now on
a day to day basis for UK Pensioners and their dependants residing in Cyprus

Applications have to be made by securing EEC Form E 121 from the UK Authorities
especially for UK Pensioners from the International Pensions Unit in Newcastle.
Under this form, "Dependants" - viz Spouse and Children are also "fully" covered.
 

This form should then be lodged with your local Hospital with application for issue of
a "Pink" Cyprus Medical Card giving access to treatment on the same basis as "local"
Cypriots.


The application should be suported with Copy Passport details Evidence of Residency
in Cyprus, namely copy Purchase Contract or Rental Agreement and copies of some
Utility Bills - [Tel - Water or Electricity or Local Rates] to evidence "local residency"
A period of 4/6 weeks is usual for the "Pink" Medical to be issued.
Once permits are issued - they currently, have to be renewed Annually.

Form No's E 111 - 112 & 123 should be completed and lodged 

PRESCIPTIONS

Under the "Pink Card" a fraction of the Price of Medication prescriptions in the
U.K and this Price [a few Cyp] can cover "multiple" items.

N.B
Not all Branded Drugs are available under the Cyprus Health Scheme.
If your 'brand' is not available a generic equivalent will be offered or you
may purchase 'privately'

LOCAL HOSPITALS

The main Government Hospitals serving the Eastern Coast Famagusta Districts
are at Larnaca General and Paralimni with specialist Facilities in Nicosia
including Oncology and Scanning
Larnaca General has wide and modern facilities inc a specialized and dedicated
Kidney Dialysis Unit 

Full local Ambulance Services support these Hospitals.

LOCAL CLINICS

There is a tremendous range of excellent "local" Private Clinic - many
supported by local and International Healthcare Insurance Schemes.
These covering every aspect of Medicine and treatment - Child birth
- Major & Minor Surgery - Cardiology - Gynocology - Haemotology etc etc.

There are some 6 major Clinics alone serving the Protaras / Paralimni areas
including several multi-functional Clinics with highly qualified Doctors &
Consultant Surgeons as well as the highest standard of Nursing care from
local and many English and European highly qualified and caring Nursing Staff.

Charges for Private Treatment and Hospitalization are well below current
equivalent charges in the U.K  Hospital
"Waiting Times"  are rarely an issue which even arises in Cyprus

 

PRIVATE DOCTORS

 

Cyprus is blessed with many private doctors - possibly more internationally
trained per head of population than any other EEC Country.
Most Towns and Villages will have several Local Doctors [G.P's]available to
see you - at once - same day. [as well as other "specialist" Doctors]

No Receptionist to "overcome" as in the U.K and No -  "come back next week
for an appointment" - UK response. 

In Cyprus you go to the Doctors Surgery and are seen straightaway - as it 
used to be in the UK

Private Doctor Examination & Consultations Fees can cost as little as €20
[inc Prescription form] and from €45 for a full "Examination" including
E.E.G scan and B.P monitoring etc.

 

LOCAL PRIVATE PRESCRIPTIONS

 

 

Cost of filling "Private Prescriptions" basically the same as U.K. though
quite often less
Presciptions are easily filled in local Pharmacies [every town / village will
have at least one]
There is always a Published Rota for a Sunday Service in local papers.

modern equipted local Dental Surgeries.

Many people now come to Cyprus for treatment which they say even after
paying for the flights & accomodation for a week AND TREATMENT is still
a major saving compared to U.K Charges
Plus Time - as treatment can be arranged at 24 / 48 hours notice

OPTICIANS - GLASSES and OPERATIONS

 

Cyprus is rapidly gaining a reputation for excellence and expertise.
There are many specialist eye surgeons here, performing laser and other
corrective treatments including cornea replacements and cataracts

As an example Cataract removals - using the latest ultra sound technologies
can be arranged with no waiting period and at a cost of €1200 to €1500
compared to long UK Waiting times and charges of €5000.

One excellent Consultant operates with his Israeli specialist colleague in
Nicosia the latest most modern equipment available.  Performing Operations
with merely a one week gap, between operations required on both eyes.

 

FREE EYE TESTING

When you see an Optician in Cyprus - there should be NO EYE TEST CHARGES

Glasses / Lenses and Contact lenses.
After testing you will be spoilt for choice and surprised at the difference
in Prices when compared to the U.K and including all the latest "designer"
frames
Costs can be 50% to 70% less than the U.K.
New glasses and or lenses - 'tailor made' are usually available in 48 hours
Contact lenses covering the full range of hard - soft - semi permeable and
colours are available and delivery may take just a few days longer.

Many Holidaymakers now take advantage of this and have "new Glasses"
on their 'take home' shopping list.
