Education in Cyprus

In general the standard of Education in Cyprus is high, often more so than the U.K.

The Curriculums are different however, with more emphasis at Secondary level on the "basics" of Math’s, Reading & Writing Sciences - Computer Education and Languages coming in later.

One example - a past Entrance Exam paper to the American Academy in Larnaca for Math’s - for their 2nd Year was an 'old' GCE Math’s exam paper [in the UK taken in the 5th year]

 

There are many local Kindergarten, Junior and Secondary Schools in Cyprus, especially in the Paralimni District and Villages.

As Residents and EEC Members - UK Residents Children have access to all local Schools. Experience shows that young children especially - soon adapt and quickly pick up the language, which is vital as lessons are in Greek.

There are also many Private Nursery Schools for the very young.

 

School Hours start early 8.00 or before and normally finish around 1.30 to latest 2 pm.

 

One feature is quite a considerable amount of home work given on a regular basis.  Extra private tuition is a common feature as well, especially in the afternoons Many Private Schools stay open until the early evening to assist with Parents who are working "full time"

 

School Holidays follow a similar U.K pattern, though Summer Holidays are much longer - as they start around last week in June

 Private Education

There is a tremendous range of Private Schools for English Children available in all locations and meeting all Age Groups.

As well as the English School and Falcons Public Schools in Nicosia for Larnaca and Famagusta District Residents children:

[2] King Richard School on the British Base at Dhekelia

 

The American Academy is Greek speaking and Fees in the region of Cyp 650 / 700 per term.

 

The King Richard School for British Forces Children and UK Residents and local Children on a Fee paying basis - currently in the region of Cyp 1,200 per term.  English is the language and courses are UK based GCSE and "A" Level

 

Several Private Schools and Colleges have recently opened in Paralimni and provide excellent Curriculum Facilities [including English] - at a reduced cost to the Fees of  King Richard School in Dhekelia and with easier access for Children in the Famagusta Districts

 

The British Bases at both Dhekelia and Ayios Nikolaos/Vrysoules, also have English Primary Schools where Residents younger children can attend [again on a Fee paying basis] 

 

Similar Facilities are available in the West and the Limasol areas and via St John's School on the British Base at Episkopi
